What is the correlation between demand and driving the market? JS We aim to drive and accelerate development. By developing new products and concepts, we respond to interest while at the same time driving the market forward. What role does Duni play in what is now called the new bioeconomy? JS Society needs to go from a fossil-based economy to a bio-based one. That is where it will end up. It’s unavoidable. We all need to take part in this transformation and play our part. We have policies that take us in this direction and guide product development. EG Our biggest contribution today is that the majority of our products come from renewable raw materials in the form of wood fiber. But, we also need new materials that accelerate product development and the phasing out of fossil-based products. How are Duni’s values implemented in different cultures? EG We are all human beings with the same basic needs. However, we always need to respect that there are different ways of looking at things due to cultural differences. It is, however, important that Duni’s values and Code of Conduct are followed. We aim to ensure this through clear dialog and collaborative support. JS In many respects, it is a matter of clarifying what Duni stands for and trying to attract employees who share our values. We then try to create credibility for what we stand for through our actions. Many also seem to appreciate working for a global company with Swedish roots. We try to have a flat organization with a lot of involvement and dialog. The culture at Duni is also characterized by a sense of familiarity and informality. The Code of Conduct. How do you work with Duni’s suppliers? EG It is extremely important to have a good relationship with suppliers. We need to work smarter, not harder. We contribute knowledge and requirements that make it easier for companies that want to grow and export to Europe. It's great to see companies develop in partnership with us. How can you make sure that Duni delivers what it promises in terms of a product's environmental properties? EG If it’s possible to test different aspects of a product, we do so. And if it’s possible to have an external review and third-party certification, we do this too. Here, working in close collaboration with our suppliers is particularly important. JS We also have clear self-checks and criteria, like those for ecoecho®. These serve as a driving force beyond what can be certified and tested. How are things going with the project for bio-based gas in production? EG Our first option is self-produced biogas. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a fully realistic option. The goal is to transform forest raw materials into biogas on site. We’ve invested a lot of time in this and will continue working to develop it. VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE We will be involved and influence how used products are handled to ensure that as much of the material as possible can be recycled. We see an obvious need for our products in an increasingly urban and service-based lifestyle. Offering the best eco-profiled products and the fact that they can generally be part of the natural cycle is an inspiring challenge. Added to this is the development of several new bio-based materials from raw materials sourced from the forest. Here, there is great interest from several sectors, and a great deal of research activity too. SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2017 // OUR BLUE MISSION
